Abstract: The extrusion process of lead-clad glass fiber composites was studied. Lead-clad glass fiber composites with diameter ranging in 0.5-1.0mm were continuously fabricated by two different extrusion processes, forward extrusion and lateral extrusion. The effects of processing parameters in the extrusion process on extrusion rate were studied. The results show that the extrusion rate increases with increasing the extrusion temperature and the extrusion pressure, but an initial pressure and a limit pressure exist. In high-speed extrusion, the extrusion temperature raising induced by deformation also affects the extrusion rate. The premium parameters are obtained, in the forward extrusion the premium pressure is 215kN; while in the lateral extrusion that is 550kN and the premium extrusion temperature is 300℃. Finally the effect of the gap size between the mold and the glass fibers on the extrusion process was studied, and it is found that the premium gap size is 0.16mm.
