Progress in Research on Vanadate-Based Coatings on Corrosion Resistance

Abstract: Vanadate, usually used as the corrosion resistant inhibitor for the paint systems, is one of the substances that have been proposed as alternative to toxic chromate for the corrosion protection. In this paper, the possibility of vanadate passivating from its chemical properties was introduced firstly. Then, the progress and examples in research on vanadate conversion coatings on the corrosion resistance were summarized. And the substrates discussed here contained aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys and so on. Finally, the research tendency of vanadate-based coatings was discussed.
