Abstract: The microstructure and properties were experimentally examined of TiC particle reinforced Al alloy composite (TiCp/LY12) fabricated by the Contact Reaction Method (CRM) and immediately followed semisolid extrusion. It was found that the microstructure of TiCp/LY12 composite is characterized by a well densified matrix free from microvoids, uniformly distributed TiC particles with approximately spherical shape and about 1μm in diameter, no fracture of TiC particles and some banding and realignment of TiC particles along the extrusion direction. It was also found that the mechanical properties (E,σ0.2b) of the composite increase simultaneously with increasing volume fraction(Vp) of TiC particles while the elongation(δ) is still maintained at a relatively high level. Additionally, the reasons for the above observations were revealed.
