Microstructures of worn surface and wear debris of as- cast Al-17Si-x La alloys under unlubricated conditions

Abstract: The tribological characlerislics of hypereuleclic Al-17Si-x La alloys against heal- trealed GCr15 hearing steel under unlubricared condilions were mvest.igalecl using a block-orrring type wear tesling apparatus in air al. room tempera-ture. Microstruciures and chemical composnions of worn surface and wear debris were characcerized by means of SEM with EDS and XRD patlerns. XRD resulls show thal wear behaviors of Al 17SrxLa alloys are similar and the Lypical worn surface is characterized by smoolh region and crater region. The mechanically mixed layer ( M ML) and the w ear debris are very similar in microstructures and chemical composilions, bolh conlaining the fine equiaxed aggregates and large plates and blocks from the both sliding counterparts (α(Al) and α-Fe) and some reaction products (lernary oxicles, i. e.Al-Fe-O and Fe-Si-O) .
