Reaction between Lanthanum and Phosphorus in Steel

Abstract: Using Miedema binary heat formation model, it was confirmed thermodynamically that the fixation of P by La is possible. The reaction between La and P was studied by means of SEM and TEM. The result of electron diffraction shows that the compound between La and P is LaP. Therefore, the possibility of reducing detrimental effect of P in low oxygen and sulfur steels by addition of rare earth metals is clarified.
