SOME SPECIAL USAGE OF“AS”,“IF”,“AS IF”

Abstract: This essay deals with some special usage of "as', "if- and as if-. which seems illogical or ungrammatical. but in reality is quite idiomatic. They are rhetorical devices favoured by masters of literature such as Shakespeare and Dickens. Many of the examples in this essay are quoted from their works. The following points are discussed: 1. “As I live” and other similar expressions used as inserted words. 2. Some special uses of “if”. a) when “if” clause is used together with swear-words such as “I'm damned. ”I’m btowed'. etc. b) "If' or "when' clause emphasizing a certain word or phrase in a simple sentence. c) If-clause used as inserted words. d) If-clause not inc；licating condition. e) use of “will” jn if-clause. 3. when “as if” clause is used with the main clause omitted.
